Head of Technical Services

We are looking for an experienced technical leader to develop and implement the technology strategy for our world-leading bioinformatics centre, as we embrace a hybrid cloud model of infrastructure provision.

You will set the strategic direction for the Technical Services Section of around 100 people operating across six functional teams – Software Development and Operations, Systems Applications, Systems Infrastructure, Technology and Science Integration, Web Development and Web Production. The teams deliver a set of research and enterprise computing services through use of three leased data centres, high performance networks, over 400PB of raw storage, 40,000+ cores of compute, and over 3000 VMware hosted virtual machines.

We are continuing a technical transformation toward a hybrid cloud model of infrastructure provision as a result of EMBL-EBI’s growth in the last decade. Key challenges of the role include managing a diverse collection of technologies and partnering with the major data resources to modernise and streamline the EMBL-EBI technology portfolio. Building successful relationships within EMBL and with international partners is an important part of the role.

You have

  • Extensive experience of leading technical teams in a complex service environment encompassing both research and enterprise IT services.
  • Wide-ranging knowledge of storage systems, databases, digital based applications and open-source systems in a complex quantitative computing environment
  • Advanced leadership and communication skills suited to a team-orientated, collaborative work environment
  • Proven success in strategic technical planning and implementation
  • Track record of complex project management and effective resource loading, budgeting and financial management
  • Thorough understanding of information security vulnerabilities and risk management
  • Exceptional analytical, evaluative and problem-solving skills combined with a strong service orientation
  • Fluent spoken and written English

You might also have

  • A second European language
  • Experience with academic and/or life sciences environment.
