Assistant Professor (5-year tenure track) and Associate Professor (tenured) in Marketing

The Department of Marketing at Hanken School of Economics invites applications for a fixed-term position as Assistant Professor (in a 5-year tenure track), and a permanent position as tenured Associate Professor, starting January 1st, 2023.

In terms of research foci and interest, we especially encourage applications from candidates that fit the profile of the Subject Area of Marketing at Hanken, and its linked research centre CERS – Centre for Relationship Marketing and Service Management

In Hanken’s tenure track, Assistant Professors obtain an employment contract for a fixed term of 5 years. After this 5-year term, you will have the opportunity to advance to the tenured Associate Professor level, with a permanent contract, upon fulfilling the university’s criteria for career advancement in terms of high-quality research and publications, teaching, and service. Qualified candidates with a strong track record in research and teaching can also apply directly for a tenured Associate Professor position. As an Associate Professor you can advance to a full Professor fulfilling the university´s criteria for career advancement.

Being a researcher and teacher in marketing at Hanken implies endowing students with a grasp of marketing as a strategic process that purposefully drives companies towards profitable growth, in an environmentally and socially responsible manner – through profound understanding of customer behaviour. Accordingly, both our research projects and study programs focus on the critical role of customer and market insights for the successful strategic management of businesses in various industries and business environments. Our research profile strongly builds on thought leadership in service management.

For the position as Assistant or Associate Professor, we are especially welcoming applications from candidates with research and teaching interest in one or more of the following research areas: Service marketing, Service innovation, Customer experience, Marketing communication, Brand management, Strategic marketing, AI and digital marketing or Business-to-Business marketing. The candidate’s ability to create new scientific knowledge, with a high relevance for the corporate world, is a key priority.

Both as an Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at the Department of Marketing you will be engaging in the following tasks:

  • Conducting high-quality research meeting international standards, and communicating your research output to the business community and the society at large,
  • Contributing to the development of new research areas, capabilities, and projects 
  • Contributing to the competence development of students by providing research-based teaching and supervision at BSc, MSc, and PhD levels in Marketing
  • Contributing to the development of curriculums and taking responsibility for your own pedagogical development
  • Contributing to the development of international collaboration and applications for externally funded research projects,
  • Engaging in various departmental and university duties relating to teaching, research, and administration.

At the Associate Professor level, the last two tasks are emphasized to a higher degree than at the Assistant Professor level. 

Requirements

The eligibility criteria for both the Assistant and Associate Professor position are: 

  • PhD degree in marketing or a related field (for the Assistant Professor position, PhD degree at time of employment)
  • Fluent command of English

Additional eligibility criteria for the Assistant Professor position are:

  • Demonstrated research activity, including publications in scientific journals
  • Demonstrated fit between the candidate’s profile and the Subject Area of Marketing in terms of research topics and teaching 
  • High-quality plans and high potential for future academic research projects and publications (incl. research articles in preparation and in the review process “pipeline” of scientific journals)
  • Experience in teaching and supervision of students in marketing
  • International experience during or after PhD studies
  • Ability to teach and supervise in both English and Swedish is considered a strong merit. If you are not proficient in Swedish, the successful applicant is expected to show strong interest to study and learn the Swedish language.

For the Associate Professor level position, the above criteria are also valid. Furthermore, for the Associate Professor level, the following additional criteria apply:

  • Strong track record of publishing research in scientific journals
  • Track record of applying for external research funding 
  • Experience of developing courses in marketing 
  • Evidence of good teaching skills (incl. student evaluations) at different programme levels (BSc/undergraduate, MSc/graduate, PhD/post-graduate)
  • Pedagogical training and other merits
  • Experience of supervising or co-supervising PhD students
  • Experience of administrative roles and tasks at Departmental and/or School levels

In evaluating the above criteria for Associate Professor level, particular weight is given to achievements and merits during recent years (~past 5-7 years). Hanken recognizes the San Francisco Declaration of Research Assessment (DORA).

Candidates for both Assistant and Associate Professor level should explicitly describe the alignment of the candidate’s research and teaching efforts and interests with the focal topics of the position and of the Subject Area of Marketing. Candidates should also clearly state the level(s) (Assistant and/or Associate) they are applying for.

Employment terms and salary

The annual working time of the position is 1612 hours. During semesters, you are expected to spend an average of three days per week physically at the Department in Helsinki in order to actively contribute to the research and teaching environment. Teaching tasks are allocated based on the curriculum needs of the Department of Marketing and by considering the professor’s expertise and interests. The salary is based on the university salary system in Finland (including employee healthcare as well as pension and holiday contributions). The exact salary level will significantly depend upon the recruited individual’s qualifications and performance, and for the Assistant professor is 42.000€ – 52.000€, and for the Associate professor 52.000€ – 61.000€

Interviews and trial lecture

The most qualified candidates will be interviewed in person or through videoconferencing. Final short-listed candidates will be invited for a teaching demonstration and research talk. If possible, a campus visit at Hanken School of Economics in Helsinki will be arranged.
