We are now seeking an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor in the field of sustainable transport system planning.  

The position is placed in the Faculty of Built Environment at Tampere University.  Transport Research Centre Verne at faculty’s Civil Engineering Unit promotes developing a sustainable, efficient and human-centred transport system with the means of research, education and their societal impact. Our strength is in analysing the transport system broadly and as wholeness, consisting of passenger and freight transport, their demand and supply, in different transport modes, serving the needs of people, business and society, connected to land use and urban structure as well as to logistic processes and supply networks.   

Job description   

We are looking for a sustainable transport scholar to expand the research group. You have the ability to lead and collaborate within an international research group and to successfully teach a multicultural student group. You will also, together with colleagues, be responsible for teaching and developing the international master’s degree programme in sustainable transport.   

Ideally, you are a future-oriented researcher with a proven capability to acquire funding for, and manage, multi-stakeholder research projects and publish in high-quality journals. You enjoy looking into the system-wide effects of the changes in the transport system and are able to connect your research with related fields, such as civil engineering, urban planning, environmental health, social sciences and new technology.    

Your field of research could include e.g. transport system planning, travel behaviour, mobility management, transport modelling, urban planning, sustainability transitions in transport context, transport engineering, sustainable transport policy or other relevant fields.    

The duties of the professor will be further specified, and their quantitative ratios confirmed, in the annual workload plan. The duties will also be proportioned to the level of seniority; For more senior level appointments, leading research, carrying out international research activities will be emphasized. 

Requirements   

We expect you to have a doctoral degree in relevant field. Further requirements for each tenure track level are as follows:  

Assistant Professor   

We require:  

  • Ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to pursue scholarly activity at a high international level of excellence.  
  • Teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position.   

Associate professor  

We require:  

  • Track record of independent scholarly activity.    
  • Ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding.  
  • Track record of international scholarly activity.      
  • Teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position.     

Professor  

We require:  

  • High-level scholarly expertise.  
  • Experience of leading scientific research.  
  • Ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction.  
  • Track record of winning external research funding.  
  • Track record of international scholarly activity.   

You need to be fluent in the English language in order to be able to manage the position. Knowledge of the Finnish language and culture can be seen as an advantage. Please be prepared to provide proof of your merits when requested.  

On all levels we expect you to have a track record of peer reviewed publications and to have strong methodological skills in transport research. Experience from supervising bachelor’s, master’s and PhD’s theses, proven skills in managing course modules in the field of transport, as well as pedagogical training are appreciated.

Transport Research Centre Verne at Tampere University has established itself as the leading transport research group in Finland and an internationally recognized contributor in the fields of energy and climate issues of transport and mobility-as-a-service related research. Ongoing research by Transport Research Verne focuses on promoting the transition to sustainable transport and logistics through decarbonisation, traffic safety improvements, reduction in transport poverty and efficiency improvements in logistics. Verne studies land use, transport policy, transport economics, transport modelling, digitalisation, automation and electrification as tools to achieve sustainable transition.

Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The starting salary range will be from €4,000 to €4,600/month for an assistant professor, from €4,600 to €5,300/month for an associate professor, and from €5,500 to €6,300/month for a professor. A higher salary may be agreed upon based on the successful candidate’s experience and/or performance. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.
