The joint research of the Software Engineering group at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences (ITC) and the Urban Informatics group at the Faculty of Built Environment (BEN), both at Tampere University, Finland, are doing interdisciplinary research by bridging theory and practice and closely cooperating with the industry. 

We invite you to join the EU and Academy of Finland funded AeroPolis project developing the future autonomous aerial systems of micro-airports for drones. We are a consortium of four universities in Tampere, Turku, Helsinki, and Oulu. Your work location will be in Tampere.

Job Description

We seek for a Researcher with strong interest in autonomous aerial systems and in their embedded and cloud connected software systems. We value experience and interest in software development, IoT and augmented reality applications.

The main task of the Researcher will be developing together with the AeroPolis team digital mobile solutions for safe landings and take-offs of drones. The tasks consist of developing AR/MR solutions based on image and sensor data. The work will be implemented mainly in the IOS (or Android) development environments and with links to the cloud infrastructure and the drones. The work will involve application development for mobile gadgets in real-world environment. Further, you will have a chance to explore the developed applications as part of the larger system architecture within the safe management of air space and data exchange of drone fleet operations and client interfaces. 

The exact direction of the work is determined by the project tasks, candidate’s experience, and interests. Participation in the project offers international cooperation possibilities.

Requirements

Outstanding candidates from the areas of Computer Science, AR/VR/MR, IoT, Computer Vision, Robotics or other applicable fields are welcome to apply. The candidate is expected to conduct independent research, implement the concepts in practices, and be able to collaborate with a multidisciplinary research team. 

You are expected to have a master’s degree in an applicable field (e.g. Computer Science) and experience/competence in at least some of the areas below:  

  • software development, IoT and augmented reality applications.
  • embedded and cloud connected software systems. 
  • development of AR/MR solutions 
  • image and sensor data
  • IOS (or Android) development environments
  • cloud infrastructures
  • drones
  • data exchange of client interfaces. 

Depending on the profile of the selected person, the duties may include the opportunity to conduct research aimed at a doctoral dissertation. This requires the supervisor’s consent and obtaining the right to postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences at Tampere University. The position will be filled for a period of 2 years with a potential extension. The starting date is as soon as possible, preferably by 1 October 2022 or as mutually agreed upon by both parties. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Researcher is placed on level 2 – 4 of the job requirements scale. Starting salary for Researcher could be example ca. 2600 EUR/month.

AeroPolis-projekti kehittää tulevaisuuden mikrolentoasemien autonomisia ilmajärjestelmiä droneille. Olemme neljän yliopiston konsortio Tampereella, Turussa, Helsingissä ja Oulussa. Työpaikkasi on Tampereella. AeroPolis hankkeseen haetaan nyt tutkijaa. 

Tehtävänkuvaus:

Suomen Akatemian ja EU:n rahoittamassa AeroPolis-hankkeessa tutkitaan droonien käyttöä logistiikassa ja datan keruussa. Käytännön sovelluksissa droonien turvallinen autonominen laskeutuminen ja lentoonlähtö edellyttävät digitaalisia ratkaisuja, joilla droonien ohjausta, tilannekuvaa, palvelujen toteutusta voidaan toteuttaa ja viestiä. Etsimme tutkijaa monialaiseen ryhmään kehittämään kamerapohjaisia applikaatioita ja informaatioratkaisuja droonipalvelujen toteuttamiseksi.

Tarjoamme: 

Paikan monialaisessa, innovatiivisessa ja kansainvälisessä ryhmässä, jossa on mahdollisuus ottaa ja saada vastuuta käytännön sovelluksien kehittämisessä. Valitun henkilön profiilista riippuen tehtäviin voi sisältyä mahdollisuus tehdä väitöskirjaan tähtäävää tutkimusta. Tämä edellyttää esimiehen suostumusta ja jatko-opinto-oikeuden saamista Tampereen yliopiston informaatioteknologian ja viestinnän tiedekunnassa.

Vaatimukset: 

Edellytämme laaja-alaista ja syvällistä ohjelmisto- ja sovelluskehitysosaamista vähintään maisterin tutkintotasolla. Taustasi voi olla esim. ohjelmistokehityksessä, koneoppimisessa tai robotiikassa. Toivomme innostusta monialaiseen ja yrittäjämäiseen työskentelyyn.
